Beefy Calzones

We tried this recipe last night, and loved it. I did have a lot of difficulty handling the pizza dough, and I also discovered we do not have a rolling pin, so I had to use a spray can of cooking spray instead. Despite the difficulties, it turned out great, and every bit of it was eaten up. This beefy calzones recipe is from the 100 Best Hamburger (Digest Comb-Bound Cookbooks) cookbook.

The ingredients are close to the original recipe, but I did omit a few things that my boyfriend doesn't like, and I did change up the preparation a bit.
Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 15 oz. can tomato sauce
  • ½ cup A-1 steak sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 11 oz. package refrigerated pizza dough
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. In a skillet, brown the ground beef with the onions. Drain fat.
  3. While ground beef is cooking, put tomato sauce, A-1, and Italian seasoning in a saucepan and boil to a boil, cooking until slightly thickened.
  4. Pour most of the sauce mixture into the ground beef, stir to combine.
  5. Roll pizza dough out thinly, and cut across twice, making 4 equal squares.
  6. Grease cooking sheet and place dough on sheet.
  7. Place ground beef mixture in each dough square, and folding diagonally to form triangles, and sealing edges.
  8. Place in oven and bake for 5 minutes, removing briefly to top with cheese. Bake for another 15 minutes or until crust is golden brown.
  9. Serve with extra sauce for dipping.
